About
Me
When I was born in England in 1934, my
birth did not bring joy to my parents, since I was the
result of an illicit affair. My father was an African
law student boarding with my mother and her husband,
a Baptist pastor. Nobody wanted me and I learned much
later in life that my mother had tried to abort me.
Some distance away from their home stood a red brick
mansion known as The Home of Compassion. It still stands
today and is situated just across the River Thames from
Hampton Court Palace. The owner was a Reverend Mother
Superior, and within its walls, she and her small private
order of Anglican nuns cared for the aged. She heard
about my situation and without hesitation arranged to
take me into her care.
Reverend Mother later bought a house
across the road and opened a home for children. As her
first charge, I was personally adopted by her at the
age of two. World War II separated me from Reverend Mother
as we, the children, were evacuated to the south of England.
Terror and torment were my lot; abuse from various caregivers
plus the bombing and raids left their mark and I emerged
into adulthood with fears and inner scars.
Taking up nursing as a career at
the insistence of Reverend Mother, I soon fell in love
and began to raise a family. However, my dreams were
shattered, as I eventually suffered a broken marriage
and single parenthood. My family’s
move to Canada had not brought about a new beginning
but only the beginning of a new struggle to raise my
children alone.
In 1975 I met Jesus and understood
what it meant to have a relationship with him. Life’s
trials continued, but with faith in God the burdens
became lighter.
In June 2002 I married Allan, a
widower. We love each other and enjoy visits from our
children: on my side of the family, Michael and his
wife Kelly; David and his wife Sue; Christopher and
his special girl, Patrice; and Daniela and hubby Mike;
on Allan’s side of
the family, his daughters Kelsey and Dianne, and Dianne’s
husband Jack; and our grandchildren, Jasmine, Annie,
Christian, Corbin and baby Kyle.
